The 9th Day of Av begins this year August 12 at sundown. In the Jewish calendar it is a one-day fast holiday, commemorating many tragedies in the lives of the Jewish people, primarily the destruction of both Temples in Jerusalem. For some Jews, additional tragic events have been added to the list over millennia; for others, it has become a day of hope as well as mourning.
