Challah is a delicious part of a Shabbat or other holiday table. It’s also fairly easy to make at home, especially with the help of a bread machine! Here’s a simple but delicious recipe.
Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 2 eggs (plus 1 egg for wash)
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1/2 tbsp salt
- 3 cups flour
- 1 tbsp (or one packet) instant dry yeast
Add the liquids to your bread machine, water first.
Add all the dry ingredients except the yeast, flour last, making an indentation in the flour large enough to hold the yeast.
Add the yeast into the indentation.
Use the dough setting on your bread machine to make dough.
Braid the dough on a lightly floured surface and tuck in the ends (a simple three strand braid is easiest to start with, but many different braid styles can be found online if you want to explore).
Let the braided dough rise until doubled, adding an egg wash when partway risen or when ready to go into the oven.
Bake for 20 minutes at 375° in a pre-heated oven.
Enjoy!
Braiding Tips!
I can’t use eggs because my daughter is vegan. Substitute?
